How To Paint Modern Pine Furniture

How To Paint Modern Pine Furniture

SCROLL DOWN for full video.

When I was asked to paint some furniture for video tutorials and blogs ,I knew instantly I had to include modern pine. I get so many people asking about how to update their bedside lockers, headboards etc and of course the ‘dresser’. Some of this modern pine , not all, are really good quality furniture and although they can seem dated now, they paint up so well, that your friends and family will think you have a new piece of furniture.

So let’s look at the pine dresser . I put a call out on social media and a woman came back to me from Mountmellick and offered her dresser for a revamp. You can see the yellowy pine with all the knots. Now have a look at the AFTER photo and then I will tell you what I did.

Step by step and all in one day……and dont forget, you can also watch the video tutorial on this project HERE

Didn’t it turn out GORGEOUS !! The woman was absolutely delighted!!

So what did i do?  Well i prepared the wood and then painted it..

Step 1:

I cleaned it …. you must clean the furniture. I promise, even if you think it doesnt need this.. it does! look at the dirt on my cloth in the video. To clean i use a 50/50 mix of methylated spirits and water in an old shower spray bottle. Sprayed straight on to the furniture. Wiped with a sponge and kitchen towel to dry and remove dirt.

Step 2…. Scuff Sand

Now this seems to confuse people who think they need to get out power sanders or sand until their hands fall off… NO>>> to both . A scuff sand is all you need and a scuff sand is a light sanding that creates millions of little scratches in the surface of the piece that allow your new paint or primer to adhere well… and let me tell you folks… ADHESION IS KING ! If your paint doesnt adhere well, you have just wasted you time painting.See the video for how to scuff sand… Click Here

Step 3 … Primer

Yes of course you should prime but its literally the same as putting on your first coat of paint and it makes ALL the difference. Pine especially has to be primed to ensure all those knots dont come through again… and you cannot use a water based primer either… you have a choice of OIL based or Shellac based primers for sealing in any nasties. For this job i chose the oil based BLOXX IT. The blue tin below it, it the one you would use for furniture that you dont have to block in any nasties.

In the video I show you how to cover your roller tray so you dont have to clean it afterwards… thats a really handy tip when using oil based products!

So now I have the whole unit primed … I would usually do this much one day and leave it all to dry completely and paint the second day… but you can do it all in one day, so long as you make sure you leave enough time for the products to dry. 40min drying time on the bloxx it.

It was time now to start rolling on my paint… ah this bit i love, you really start to see it all come together. The colour the customer chose was from the Shabby.ie Coluur Collection for Furniture called Shabby Timeless and can be bought from the www.shabby.ie or any fleetwood store . She also chose the Advanced Eggshell finish as that gives a lovely low sheen on furniture. The designers choice.

In the video you will see how easy the paint is to apply and the completely flat sprayed like finish you get. I used a Fleetwood  mini foam roller, Covered the table with a big dustsheet and I raised the bottom of the dresser up of the floor on paint tins ! This made getting to the bottom areas much easier…. What do you think of the finish ?? Would you give it a go yourself. I do hope so..
